Latinxs and the Environment

Latinxs and the Environment: Partnerships to Pave Pathways to the Professoriate (L&E) brings together UC Riverside and UC Berkeley with the overarching goal to increase the number of Latinx graduate students and faculty who participate in research in environmental fields. Guided by five specific goals to: 1) increase recruitment and retention of Latinx students and faculty; 2) develop faculty collaborations; 3) build a multi-campus Latinx community; 4) increase the success of student and faculty applications; and 5) increase networking and research communication opportunities, L&E will generate a UC-wide collaborative network driven by an intellectual focus in environmental, natural, physical, engineering and social science fields that interact with community leaders. This network will be generated by six major programmatic elements including undergraduate summer fellowships, support for UCR-UCB collaborative research, a year-round student-led seminar, a tiered mentoring program, academic and professional development workshops, and a UC-wide L&E Research Conference. The L&E structure incorporates and enhances ongoing programming at UCR and UCB as well as leveraging more than 15 existing collaborations and centers across the two campuses. Latinx communities are particularly affected by environmental change yet are underrepresented in environmental majors and in the decision-making process. This program will grow a long-term sustainable network of educated and invested participants in environmental research.
